HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
- After a scoreless first inning, the Monarchs got the chance to do what Tom Austin's teams are known for doing best – small ball. Leading off the second inning, Caleb Rogers was hit by a pitch. The next five Methodist batters all laid down bunts. That series of bunts led to three errors by the visitors, aiding in the Monarchs scoring four runs.
- Following the string of bunts, Jackson Deal doubled to right-center field to send a fifth run home. A flyout by Hunter Hollman moved Deal to third, then a Banks Hartman single scored Deal to put Methodist ahead 6-0.
- The Monarchs added one run in the third inning and another in the fourth, giving Cameron Seagroves and Hartman an RBI each. In the fifth inning, the teams traded two runs apiece, making the score 10-2 in favor of Methodist.
- With Brice Herring in to pitch the eighth for the Monarchs, Mary Baldwin put two more runs on the board. In the bottom of the eighth, Seagroves batted in Justin Blunt, giving Methodist its 11th run.
GAME 2
- The Fighting Squirrels struck first with a run in the fourth inning after a slow offensive start from both teams. In the fifth inning, Banks Engle and Caleb Greene reached on back-to-back singles, then both scored on a hit up the middle by Austin Rinzel.
- Mary Baldwin tied the game in the top of the seventh, then took a 3-2 lead in the eighth. Scoring an unearned run in the top of the ninth, the visitors took a two-run lead into the final frame.
- With a little Methodist magic (and two errors by the Fighting Squirrels), the Monarchs scored three runs to register a walk-off win. An infield single by Greene with bases loaded scored one run, then Tristen Melvin was hit by a pitch to walk in the tying run. Finally, Deal drew a walk that allowed the winning run to score.
