Monarchs Fall to Maroons in Midweek Matchup

ROCKY MOUNT, Va.  Things looked promising for the Methodist baseball team as the Monarchs held an advantage after three innings on Tuesday. However, Roanoke captured the lead in the fourth inning and would not relinquish it, steering to a 12-4 victory over Methodist.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Roanoke def. Methodist, 12-4
Records: Methodist 14-13, Roanoke 14-12
Location: Naff Field; Rocky Mount, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first inning, Methodist put the first run on the board in the top of the second. Caleb Rogers recorded a leadoff single, then after stealing second base and advancing to third on an error, he was batted in by Brandon Mauger.
  • Banks Engle reached base on a walk in the fourth inning, stole second base, then made his way home on an RBI single by Tristen Melvin.
  • Entering the bottom of the fourth, Methodist pitcher Jackson Kuhn had retired eight straight batters with three strikeouts. That streak ended as the Maroons logged four straight hits to start the frame, generating two runs which tied the game at 2-2. After one out, a sacrifice fly to center field scored two more runs for Roanoke, putting the Monarchs down 4-2.
  • The Maroons scored one more run in the fifth (unearned), prompting Methodist to pull Kuhn and put Presley Patterson on the mound to get the last out of the inning.
  • The Monarchs rallied in the seventh, piecing together a walk and two singles to load the bases with no outs. Banks Hartman and Rogers each recorded an RBI to bring Methodist within one run of Roanoke, but the Maroons responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Roanoke added five more runs in the bottom of the eighth, taking an eight-run lead that proved to be too much for Methodist to overcome.
STAT FACTS
  • Roanoke's Jonny Wall batted 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Methodist's Hunter Hollman reached base three times, batting 2-for-4 while also drawing a walk.
  • With the loss, Methodist drops to 1-5 during midweek games, with opponents averaging 13 runs per game. The Monarchs have held a lead in four of those losses.
