Baseball Picks Up Two More Wins to Conclude Armstrong Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University baseball finished its second invitational, Armstrong, of season on Sunday, March 3, with a couple of wins. First the Monarchs came from behind to upset nationally ranked, #15, Christopher Newport University 12-11 in extras then followed that up with a run-rule victory, 13-3, over Immaculata University, in eight innings.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. #15 Chris. Newport, 12-11 (10 Inn.); Methodist def. Immaculata, 13-3 (8 Inn.)
Records: Methodist 6-4; Chris. Newport 8-3; Immaculata 3-4
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • The Captains got to the Methodist pitching staff early and scored four runs in the first inning.
  • The Monarch would have to wait another inning before scoring their first runs of the ballgame. A pair of hits put runners on second & third for Methodist. Caleb Rogers then came up to the plate and sent an opposite field double to right center to bring in both runs, 4-2.
  • The fifth & sixth innings saw Chris. Newport increase its advantage to 10-3, as the Captains tallied two runs in fifth before adding four more in the sixth.
  • In desperate need of some runs, Rogers delivered for the Monarchs. With bases loaded, he singled to center to drive in another two runs and then a Chris. Newport error gifted Methodist a third run in the sixth inning.
  • Scoring three runs in the seventh were the Monarchs to trim the deficit down to one, 10-9. Hunter Hollman recorded the only RBI, on a groundout, for Methodist before a costly throwing error by the Captains allowed two additional Monarchs to cross home.
  • The score difference remained the same following the eighth inning as both teams registered a run, with Jackson Deal getting the RBI for Methodist.
  • To begin the bottom of the ninth inning, the first Monarch batter reached base on a throw that pulled the first baseman off the bag. Coming on as a pinch runner afterwards was freshman Austin Rinzel. The next batter was Banks Engle, who pulled the ball down the left field line to score the speedy Rinzel from first base and tie the game up, 11-11.
  • In the 10th, a strikeout, a walk, a single, and a groundout, all in that order, had Methodist runners on second and third with two outs. Jackson Kuhn stepped up to the plate and on a 3-1 count he snuck a base hit through the left side of the infield to win it for the Monarchs.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • After playing catch-up in its last game, Methodist jumped out to a 5-0 lead during its second game of the day. The Monarchs got one run in the second inning before adding four more in the fourth, driving in three of the five runs was Rogers.
  • The Mighty Macs recorded their first run in the sixth inning.
  • RBIs by Hollman and Brandon Mauger, along with an Immaculata error, tacked on three more runs for Methodist, 8-1.
  • The Mighty Macs registered their last two runs in the top half of eighth on back-to-back singles.
  • During the bottom half of eighth, the Monarchs scored the necessary five runs to invoke the invitationals run-rule. A good time to have the name Banks, as Hartman & Engle each picked up two RBIs on their base hits. Engle recorded the final run for Methodist after trotting home on a wild pitch.
NUMBERS
  • Having an excellent day at the plate for the Monarchs was Rogers. He went 5 for 7 (.714) and had seven RBIs between both games. Also seeing the ball well was Engle, who was a doubles machine with four of his hits (out of five total today) being a two-bagger.
  • The Methodist trio of Anthony Sarbanes, Brice Herring, and Colton Ide pitched well against Immaculata's lineup. They gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out 11 Mighty Macs. Sarbanes started the game and went a career-long four innings and recorded a career-high eight punchouts.
  • This is the second consecutive season the Monarchs have defeated Chris. Newport and Immaculata in the same weekend.
UP NEXT
Methodist is back at it on Tuesday, March 5, with another home game as the team welcomes Johnson & Wales University of Providence (R.I.) to Armstrong-Shelley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
