HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a bullpen day for the Monarchs, who began the game with freshman Colton Ide on the mound. He allowed just one run in the top of the first, then was gifted six runs in the bottom of the inning courtesy of the Methodist offense.
  • The six-run frame started with back-to-back walks before Hunter Hollman delivered a 2-RBI double to right-center field. After two more runs had been scored by the Monarchs, Caleb Greene (the ninth man in the lineup) stepped up to the plate and produced his own 2-RBI double, putting Methodist ahead 6-1.
  • Ide gave up two more runs in the second inning, finishing his day with a three-run lead. In the bottom of the second, Johnson & Wales made a switch on the mound, inserting lefty Max Randazzo into the lineup. He faced just three batters during the frame, forcing a fly out, a foul out and a line out.
  • Methodist turned to Josh Plisko to start the third. Plisko put two batters on base before giving up a three-run homer. Presley Patterson relieved Plisko to start the fourth inning, collecting three outs through three batters faced. However, Patterson conceded a solo homerun and a 2-RBI triple in the fifth, ending his day.
  • Jackson Hunter took the mound for Methodist in the sixth, escaping the inning with no runs scored, but the top of the seventh inning saw three hits that produced three runs – all charged to Hunter. Down 12-6, Methodist was able to make up some of the difference in the bottom of the seventh after Randazzo was relieved. With the help of an error and a wild pitch by the Wildcats, the Monarchs put two (unearned) runs on the board to close the gap ever so slightly.
  • After a scoreless eighth inning for both teams, Johnson & Wales added two more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the ninth, pushing ahead by six. Methodist proved unsuccessful in adding to its total in the bottom of the inning.
