Methodist Shows Strong Effort in Loss at Division I Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  Taking on an NCAA Division I opponent on Thursday, the Methodist men's tennis team played several close matches in a 7-0 loss to Queens University of Charlotte.
 
Despite the overall team loss, Methodist's Wills Belser and Drew Guarnieri defeated their Queens opponents in the No. 3 doubles match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Queens took the doubles point to begin the match. In the No. 1 doubles match, Matthew Hurley and Harry Crokam put up a tough fight, falling 6-4. On the second court, Cameron Roth and Decklan Rayner were defeated 6-0. Finally, Belser and Guarnieri earned Methodist's lone victory as the pair took down the No. 3 Queens duo 7-5.
  • Hurley nearly picked up a win in the No. 1 singles match as the sophomore won the first set 6-4, then lost the second set 6-3 before dropping the tiebreaker too.
  • In No. 2 singles, Guarnieri fell in sets of 6-1 and 6-0, while Belser also dropped sets of 6-1 and 6-0 in No. 3 singles. 
  • Crokam competed hard on the No. 4 singles court, suffering defeat after two sets of 6-3 each. In the fifth singles match, Rayner dropped his first set 6-2, then bounced back to win the second set 6-3. He went on to fall in the tiebreaker.
  • Brady Mendler represented Methodist in the sixth singles match, competing hard in set losses of 6-2 and 6-3.
UP NEXT
The Monarchs have nearly a two-week break before they compete next against Pfeiffer – Methodist's first USA South opponent of the season – in Misenheimer on March 20 at 2 p.m.
