RALEIGH, N.C.  With an extra-inning victory in game one and a more comfortable win in game two, the Methodist softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Meredith on Wednesday afternoon. HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • A first-inning sacrifice fly by Hannah Lovick scored Alexandra Edwards to give Methodist an early one-run advantage. The Avenging Angels answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, then took a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
  • The Monarchs put themselves in great position in the top of the sixth inning, recording six hits (all singles) and benefiting from two Meredith errors while putting five runs on the board.
  • Methodist's lead vanished in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Avenging Angels scored four runs to tie the game at 6-6. With bases loaded, Kiersten Margoupis forced the Meredith batter to fly out.
  • With Laney Ayres placed on second to start the eighth inning (international tie breaker rule), Edwards grounded out to first base, advancing the Ayres to third. A fly ball hit to the outfield by Lovick was the sacrifice needed to bring Ayres home and put Methodist in the drivers seat.
  • Emma Neeley entered to pitch the bottom frame for the Monarchs, and the junior struck out one batter while holding the home team scoreless.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Sydney Sizemore got the scoring started with a 2 RBI single in the first inning. Once again, Meredith responded with one run in the bottom of the first and another in the third.
  • With the score tied at 2-2, Rachel Blanchard singled in the fourth inning, scoring Edwards to gain the lead for Methodist.
  • The Monarchs added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Alyssa Rivas and Sizemore recorded back-to-back RBI doubles.

NUMBERS
  • After securing her first save on the season in game one, Emma Neeley pitched the entirety of game two, conceding just six hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out one batter for her first win of the season.
  • Rachel Blanchard continued to add to her breakout season, batting 6-for-9 on the day with two RBI and one run scored.
