Monarchs Fall to No. 17 Pfeiffer at Home

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  With hopes of taking down the almost-perfect Pfeiffer Falcons, the Methodist softball team fell short of victory during both halves of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Monarchs dropped game one 12-0 in five innings before suffering a 4-0 loss in game two.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 12-0 (5 inn.); Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 4-0
Records: Methodist 17-13 (7-5 USA South); Pfeiffer 30-1 (11-1 USA South)
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • With bases loaded in the top of the first, Haley Downes caught a line drive, then stepped on second base for a double play to end the frame. Rachel Blanchard's first-inning double would prove to be the only hit for the Monarchs in game one.
  • Kiersten Margoupis, who has excelled in almost every appearance for the Monarchs this season, conceded two runs in the second inning before working her way out of a bases-loaded situation.
  • In the third inning, the Falcons teed off for six more runs. Sarah Haywood entered the circle to start the fourth, allowing three hits and three walks which led to four runs (two unearned). Pfeiffer's 12-0 lead after five innings imposed a mercy rule, ending the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • After pitching the last inning of game one, Emma Neeley took to the circle for the Monarchs in game two. After putting two batters on base via walk, Neeley gave up a single that drove in one run for the Falcons.
  • The Monarchs had runners in scoring position in the bottom of the first but couldn't bring them home. Methodist saw its best opportunity to tie the game in the fifth inning when Rachel Lawson recorded a one-out triple down the right-field line. However, she was stranded on base.
  • Neeley impressed through six innings, holding the Falcons at one run, but Pfeiffer's offense found a second wind in the top of the seventh. Adding three runs to the total, the visitors extended their lead to four runs, which the Monarchs were unable to match in the final frame.

NUMBERS
  • Pfeiffer's Kali Morton and Kenzi Lyall showed why they sit atop the conference in most pitching statistical categories, combining for nine strikeouts and together allowing just four hits for Methodist on the day. The duo now boasts a 26-0 record.
  • Rachel Blanchard batted 2-for-4 on the day – the only Monarch to reach base more than once.
  • Methodist pitchers allowed 10 walks across 12 innings.
UP NEXT
Methodist has a week to prepare for its next opponent. The Monarchs make a trip to Virginia next weekend with the first stop being at Southern Virginia. The USA South doubleheader will take place on Saturday, April 20 beginning at 1 p.m.
