Monarchs Concede 10 Runs in Loss to Guilford

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In a non-conference midweek matchup versus Guilford on Tuesday afternoon, the Methodist baseball team erased an early five-run deficit before ultimately falling to the Quakers by a score of 10-7. It was a duel of bullpens as the Monarchs pitched eight different players while seven guys took the mound for the visitors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Presley Patterson toed the rubber first for Methodist, putting the first three Guilford batters on base. He forced the next guy he faced into a double play, with one run scoring on the play. Now with two outs, the Quakers produced back-to-back singles followed by a blast over the left-field wall that made the score 5-0.
  • Methodist got three runs back in the bottom of the first, featuring a Banks Engle RBI triple as well as Engle successfully stealing home. Andrew Baur pitched a scoreless second inning, then gave up a leadoff homerun to Guilford's Chase Wade to start the third.
  • Down 6-3, the Monarchs scored twice more in the bottom of the third and once in the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.
  • Tripp Beck pitched a clean top of the fifth before passing the baton to Tanner Simpson to start the sixth. Simpson conceded four consecutive hits to start the inning, leading to Brice Herring assuming the mound. The Quakers earned three runs off of Simpson, establishing a new lead.
  • Methodist managed to score one run in the seventh, which Guilford replicated in the top of the eighth.
  • In the top of the ninth, Austin Rinzel prompted applause from the home fans as he made a spectacular diving catch in left-center field for the first out of the inning.
  • With the homerun-hitting third baseman Wade pitching for Guilford in the final frame, the Monarchs were unable to yield any more runs.
STAT FACTS
  • Methodist left bases loaded in the second, fifth and seventh innings. The Monarchs left a total of 14 runners on base during the game.
  • Hunter Hollman and Austin Rinzel both reached base four times, each batting 1-for-2 while also drawing three walks apiece.
  • Freshmen Banks Hartman and Brandon Mauger each earned three hits on the day.
  • Methodist has lost five games in a row and seven of the last eight.
