SWEET BRIAR, Va. Wrapping up its road trip to Virginia, the Methodist softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader at Sweet Briar on Sunday. The Monarchs suffered an eight-run-rule defeat in game one, then lost the second game on a walk-off bunt.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
- Sweet Briar wasted no time in putting runs on the board, scoring four runs in the first inning and another four in the second.
- Alyssa Rivas launched a sacrifice fly that brought in one run during the third inning, and Rachel Blanchard scored on a pass ball to make the score 8-2.
- The Vixens scored once more in the fourth, which Minnie Johnson matched in the fifth as she batted in Lynsey Plunkett. Scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Sweet Briar went ahead 11-3, which put an end to the game (due to an eight-run advantage after five innings).
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
- Methodist afforded the Vixens a three-run lead in the bottom of the second, but the Monarchs made the score 3-1 in the top of the fourth as McKenzie Lanphear singled to drive in Laney Ayres.
- Capturing its first lead of the day, Methodist added three runs to its total in the top of the sixth, with Madison Sanchez scoring on a wild pitch while Johnson and Hannah Lovick each recorded an RBI double.
- The Monarchs held a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, but with one out, the Vixens notched three consecutive singles, leading to one run. A walk drawn by the next batter loaded the bases, and a successful bunt sent the winning run across home plate for Sweet Briar.
NUMBERS
- Methodist's pitchers conceded 11 walks on the day, including seven during the five-inning first game.
- Monarch batters combined for five doubles on the day, including Alyssa Rivas, who recorded a two-bagger in both contests.
