Methodist Topped by Pfeiffer in Regular-Season Finale

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Taking the field for a final regular-season contest, the Methodist men's lacrosse team was met by a strong force in the form of the Pfeiffer University Falcons. The Monarchs amassed an 11-goal deficit by halftime and eventually fell to the visitors by a score of 17-3.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 17-3
Records: Methodist 8-7 (5-3 USA South), Pfeiffer 8-6 (7-0 USA South)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pfeiffer put up seven unanswered goals in the first quarter, stifling Methodist's offense as the Falcons held the Monarchs to just two shot attempts in the period. In the second quarter, the visitors added four more goals to their total while continuing to shutout the home team.
  • After conceding another goal to start the second half, Methodist finally found its answer – a goal by RJ Breeden that was assisted by Cy Horner. However, there was no shift in momentum as the Falcons piled on three more goals in the third quarter and the first two goals in the fourth.
  • After a goalie change by Pfeiffer, Methodist produced two final goals – an unassisted goal by Ryan Kavounis and a score by Horner off a pass from Ayden Kennedy.
FAST FACTS
  • Three goals scored is the least amount of offense the Monarchs have produced against a conference opponent and the second fewest amount of goals scored in a single game on the season.
  • This is just the fourth game in which the Monarchs have taken fewer shot attempts than their opponent, as Methodist took 27 shots compared to Pfeiffer's 43.
  • Pfeiffer's Zach DeFazio proved to be difficult for Methodist to contain as the attackman scored seven goals.
