Monarchs Complete Day 1 of USA South Outdoor Championships

CONCORD, N.C.  At the conclusion of the first day of the USA South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Methodist men's and women's teams sit fourth and seventh respectively. The Monarchs have plenty of events on Saturday to make up ground, with just four field events and two track events final after Friday.

MEN'S POINTS EARNERS
  • In the men's high jump, Komla Akogo took fourth place, clearing 1.88 meters as he earned four points for Methodist.
  • With a toss of 34.81 meters in the men's hammer throw, Shomare Hazley finished in fifth, earning two points.
  • Methodist took five points in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Logan Williams finished fourth, clocking in at 10:11.35 for four points, while Jack Barriger came in sixth, posting a time of 10:23.70 and scoring one point.
WOMEN'S POINTS EARNERS
  • Two Monarchs collected points in the women's shot put – Rebecca McGaughnea and Lusiana Mailakeba. McGaughnea earned two points on a fifth-place, 10.02-meter throw, while Mailakeba finished right behind her in sixth place, earning one point for a throw of 9.74 meters.
TOP PRELIMS PERFORMERS
  • Three Monarchs qualified for the women's 100-meter dash final, with Imani Kee (13.25), Quierra Hawkins (13.32) and Sedajah Law (13.33) finishing six-seven-eight in the preliminary round.
  • On the men's side, three more Methodist athletes qualified for the 100-meter dash final. Tydrick Stewart (10.89) and Logan Wade (10.91) took second and third, while A'Jani Mainer sits at seventh (11.19).
  • Treazure Rosario Watson looks to compete for the women's 400-meter title after qualifying with the second-fasted time of 59.08, while Kee also qualified eighth with a time of 1:07.08.
  • For the men, Torrey Williams qualified fourth in the 400-meter run, posting a time of 52.15. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Akogo qualified fourth with a time of 1:02.01.
  • Methodist qualified three sprinters in the women's 200-meter dash and four in the men's 200-meter dash. Brandi Gardner, Rosaria Watson and Hawkins all qualified for the women as each finished in under 28 seconds. For the men, Wade, Stewart, Mainer and Torrey Williams all finished at 23.03 or better.

Methodist will look to finish strong on Day 2 of the USA South Championships, beginning Saturday at 8 a.m.
