2024 Regular Season Champs!; Tia Marlinghaus Becomes the All-Time Leader in Draw Controls

BREVARD, N.C.  Methodist University women's lacrosse are crowned the 2024 USA South Regular Season Champions after its 18-1 victory at Brevard College on Saturday.

The Monarchs capture their second regular season title, first since 2004, following a perfect 9-0 mark in league play, for the first-time in program history. The win today puts Methodist at 13-2, which is a new single-season record for wins in a season.

Also, senior Tia Marlinghaus become the all-time leader in draw controls, with 282, after snagging nine DCs. She surpasses 2020 MU graduate Monti Hendrix, who had 279.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 18-1
Records: Methodist 13-2 (9-0 USA South), Brevard 8-8 (5-4 USA South)
Location: Ives-Lemel Family; Brevard, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Kenney Martin registered the opening goal for Methodist, goals by Maddie Hagler, Mikayla Ramos, Payton Jones, and Marlinghaus created a 5-0 lead for the Monarchs. Brevard managed to score its first, and only, goal of the contest with about five minutes left in the first quarter.
  • Hagler then recorded the next three scores, one in the previous & the first two in the new frame. The combination of Kayla Nee to Jones was how Methodist tallied its 9th, 10th, & 11th goals, then Ramos and Layla Wiesenfeld, each with a score, made it 13-1 at halftime. In between Ramos and Wiesenfeld goals, Marlinghaus went into the DC being tied with Hendrix for the top spot but that soon changed as Marlinghaus secured her seventh DC of the game, at the time, to take sole possession.
  • In the third period, the Monarchs tacked on four more goals with Rosa Williams scoring twice. Methodist would only score once in the fourth quarter, a goal by Marlinghaus, to close out the game.
FAST FACTS
  • Hagler and Jones paced the Monarchs in scoring with four goals each, which is a new career-high for Hagler.
  • Methodist wraps up the regular season allowing less than 100 goals (97). The Monarchs have the number one goals against average, 6.44, in the conference, seventh-best mark in Division III.
  • For the third time this season, Methodist had a 100% clearing percentage.
