Methodist Completes Day One of VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C.  Members of the Methodist University track & field team, specifically jumpers and distance runners, traveled to High Point University on Friday, April 5, and competed at the 2024 VertKlasse Meeting.

TRACK EVENTS
  • In the second section of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Logan Williams and junior Jack Barriger placed in the top-10. Williams came in eighth with a time of ten minutes, 37.98 seconds, while Barriger crossed the finish line following a time of 10:57.66, which got him 10th.
  • Sophomore Alex Topoly participated in his first-ever 5k (outdoor) race of his collegiate career. In his section, he had the second-best time (16:18.01) among Division III athletes, and he was also faster than several D-I/D-II competitors.
FIELD EVENTS
  • Junior Komla Akogo started the day for the Monarchs, with the men's high jump in the morning. His best mark he surpasses today was 1.75m.
  • In the long jump event, junior Isaiah Cuthrell and sophomore Brandi Gardner represented Methodist. On the men's side, Cuthrell's first jump (6.00m) was his best attempt out of three, while 4.97m was the furthest leap for Gardner, her second try, on the women's side.
  • Williams also threw men's javelin today, one of two D-III athletes to compete in the event. His best throw was on his first attempt, which went 36.07m.
NEXT UP
Majority of the Methodist team heads back for day two of the VertKlasse Meeting, but also a number of Monarch throwers will head to the 2024 Braves Classic at UNC Pembroke on Saturday.
