HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
- The visiting Tornados loaded the bases in the first inning but were held scoreless. In the second inning, they scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Methodist responded in the bottom of the second with two runs.
- The Monarchs added four runs to their total in the bottom of the third, as Sydney Sizemore recorded an RBI double, Haley Downes drew an RBI walk, and Laney Ayres recorded a 2RBI double.
- Methodist's Kiersten Margoupis struck out four batters over the next three innings, allowing just one hit. In the top of the seventh, Brevard's first three batters recorded back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases, and all three soon scored. With two outs, a runner on second base and the tying run at the plate, Brevard's Ive Leighton singled to right field. As the runner on second rounded third, right fielder Rachel Blanchard picked up the ball and threw a heat-seeking missile into home that landed in the glove of Hannah Lovick, who prevented the run by tagging the Brevard baserunner for the final out of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
- Alexandra Edwards started a rally in the bottom of the first with a leadoff double. The Monarchs proceeded to bat through the entire order during the frame, piecing together five hits while putting up four runs.
- Methodist continued to add one run per inning while holding the Tornados scoreless. In the bottom of the fifth, Ayres reached first on a single before advancing to second base on an errant throw. Next, it was Edwards who doubled again, sending Ayres home to make the score 8-0, which prompted a mercy rule (eight-run lead after five innings).
NUMBERS
- Laney Ayres was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate while batting ninth during the two contests. She also recorded three RBIs and one walk.
