Monarchs Fall to Pfeiffer, Avoid Elimination with Win Over Brevard

BREVARD, N.C.  As the No. 3 seed in the USA South Tournament, the Methodist baseball team began its day with a high-scoring loss to the Pfeiffer University Falcons. This pitted the Monarchs against the host Brevard College Tornados in the ensuing contest, which Methodist was triumphant in to avoid a first-day elimination.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (Pfeiffer vs. Methodist)
  • After a 30-minute first inning in which the Falcons scored three runs and the Monarchs scored two, fans knew they were in for a long game. Methodist pitcher Josh Plisko steadied himself to pitch scoreless frames in the second and third while the Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of the third with an RBI groundout by Caleb Rogers.
  • Plisko faced the first four batters of the fourth, but he was unable to record an out and eventually was charged with three more runs. One run at a time, the Monarchs scored three in the bottom of the fourth to match the Falcons at 6-6.
  • Two runs for Pfeiffer in the fifth were answered with just one for Methodist in the bottom of the inning, but then the Monarchs scored four in the bottom of the sixth (including three that were scored on back-to-back doubles by Rogers and Banks Engle).
  • In control of an 11-8 advantage, Methodist relied on lefty Brice Herring to pitch a scoreless seventh, then returned in the bottom of the inning for another run, as Hunter Hollman laid down a bunt to the pitcher that successfully squeezed Austin Rinzel home.
  • After Herring walked the first two batters of the eighth, Methodist called upon typical closer Chase Carroll. The Falcons liked what Carroll dialed up, recording four hits while posting six runs to reclaim the lead, now 14-12.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Methodist brought one run in but left the tying run stranded 90 feet away from home.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (Methodist vs. Brevard)
  • The Monarchs went scoreless in the first frame, then Anthony Sarbanes got off to a rocky start, conceding two runs in the bottom of the first to the Torandos. Methodist's offensive answer didn't come until the fourth inning, when Brandon Mauger produced a sacrifice fly to score one run.
  • Brevard scored a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 3-1.
  • After a scoreless fifth for both sides, Methodist found its stride in the top of the sixth. With two runners on and no outs, Banks Hartman contributed a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners up to second and third. Back-to-back singles by Rogers and Mauger led to three runs scoring for the Monarchs, who pulled ahead, 4-3.
  • Methodist added two more runs in the seventh and another two in the eighth (including Austin Rinzel stealing home). With a five-run lead (8-3), the Monarchs trusted Paul Olive to finish the job. He allowed just one hit with two strikeouts while his team added one final run to its total in the top of the ninth (an RBI walk drawn by Justin Blunt).
