FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  For the first time since 2005, Methodist University women's lacrosse is playing in the league's championship game following a 19-13 victory over Southern Virginia University in the semifinals of the 2024 USA South Women's Lacrosse Tournament, on Thursday afternoon.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Southern Virginia, 19-13
Records: Methodist 15-2, Southern Virginia 9-8
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started off as a back and forth affair with Southern Virginia responding back quickly after each of Methodist first three scores. With the Knights leading 4-3, Payton Jones knotted up the scoreboard before two late quarter goals, by Mikayla Ramos, gave the Monarchs a 6-4 advantage.
  • Back-to-back Southern Virginia scores, in the second period, tied the contest at 6-6 until Jones struck again for Methodist, with her second goal of the game. Another pair of Knight goals put them back in front, 8-7, but Layla Wiesenfeld and Kennedy Martin came through for the Monarchs as they each tallied a goal to give their team a slight 9-8 lead at halftime.
  • After intermission, Methodist came out and scored three goals to push its advantage to four, 12-8. Scoring for the Monarchs was Ramos, Martin, and Maddie Hagler. Southern Virginia then cut the deficit in half with two more goals until the Monarch trio of Martin, Wiesenfeld, and Kayla Nee made it 15-10, with each of them registered a score.
  • Following an exchange of goals to begin the fourth stanza, Ramos and Tia Marlinghaus found the back of the cage for Methodist to make it a seven-goal difference, 18-11, the Monarchs largest lead of the contest. The Knights would record their last two goals within 30 seconds of each other, while Wiesenfeld capped off the scoring for Methodist.
FAST FACTS
  • Having herself a game, and stuffing the stat sheet, was Martin of the Monarchs. She scored five goals, had two assists, picked up six groundballs, caused six turnovers, and secured six draw controls.
  • Ramos also had a nice offensive day with five goals and four assists.
  • Defensively for Methodist, Brooke Murrell's six groundballs not only tied a game-high but it was also a new career-high for the sophomore. Several Monarchs also finished with two or more caused turnovers, which includes Marlinghaus, Murrell, Jones, Ainsley McGinn, and Martin.
