FERRUM, Va. Having last won a match on Sept. 7, the Methodist men's soccer team entered Wednesday's contest at Ferrum College hungry for victory. The Monarchs fed their appetite by defeating the Panthers 2–1, earning their second win of the season.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist defeats Ferrum, 2-1
Records: Methodist 2-3-2, Ferrum 3-4-0
Location: Penn-Roediger Field; Ferrum, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist possessed the ball early and often, allowing for a strong offensive attack. Six unsuccessful shots were taken by the Monarchs within the first 11 minutes — two of which were blocked, while two others were saved by Ferrum goalkeeper M.J. Upchurch.
- The seventh shot taken by the Monarchs came inside the 11th minute, flying off the foot of Josh Mott for a score. His goal, which was assisted by Steven Floyd, put Methodist on top 1–0.
- Applying pressure again early in the second period, it wasn't long before Casey Atwell delivered a strike that extended the Monarchs' lead during the 57th minute.
- A foul called on Atwell gave the Panthers a free kick from well beyond the box with just under seven minutes remaining in the match. A long ball into the box was initially headed away by a Monarch, but Anthony Ceballos-Medina was able to get a foot on the ball and connect with Jonathan Nicacio, who finished the effort for Ferrum with a goal.
- The highlight for Nicacio was soon dampened as he was shown his second yellow card with less than two minutes remaining, disqualifying him from the remainder of the match.
NUMBERS
- Cards became an issue for Ferrum late in the contest, as the Panthers were shown five cards in the final 30 minutes of play.
- Methodist's dynamic offense was on full display, as the Monarchs totaled 26 shots, placing 11 on goal. Meanwhile, the Panthers only attempted seven shots, with their lone shot on goal finding the back of the net.
