Monarchs Fall Short Against Wildcats

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Playing a final non–conference match before the start of USA South play, the Methodist men's soccer team hosted the Johnson & Wales Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon in what turned out to be an intense outing between the two teams. The Monarchs allowed two goals in the first half, then scored one of their own in the second half before falling just shy of earning a draw.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Johnson & Wales defeats Methodist, 2-1
Records: Methodist 3-4-2, Johnson & Wales 3-2-2
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a slow start offensively as neither team scored throughout the first 30 minutes. During that span, both teams were limited to just one shot on goal apiece.
  • In the 30th minute, Eugenio de la Parra Polina gave the Wildcats a 1–0 lead as he dribbled by Matthew Manzano and delivered a shot that rolled past a diving Trey Gohr.
  • Just a little over five minutes after the first goal, the Monarchs let their guard down and conceded a second score. Parra Polina lofted a ball over the Methodist defense that allowed Lucas Lesh to have a chance with only Gohr in his way. From left to right, Lesh drove the ball on the ground past the Methodist keeper and into the back right corner of the net.
  • Ten minutes into the second half, Carson Stretz sent a ball from near the corner into the box. It bounced near Mathias Navar who left it untouched, allowing Steven Floyd to send it in for a Methodist goal. Johnson & Wales goalkeeper Colin Starr sold out for what he anticipated to be a strike to the left side of the frame, but Floyd's ball breezed past into the upper right corner.
  • With new life, Methodist possessed the ball much more in the second half, which gave the Monarchs several opportunities to play for a second goal. Numerous throw–ins in Methodist's offensive zone led to chances, but the Monarchs ultimately came away from those tries empty handed.
  • Methodist's best attempt to tie the game may have come just inside the final minute. A throw–in by Alex Ramson was initially headed by Garrett Panos, then a second header by Floyd was directed towards the net. Leaping to his right side, Starr was able to extend and make a tremendous save, punching Floyd's would–be equalizer away from the goal.
NUMBERS
  • It's the fourth time this season in which Floyd has been the lone goal scorer for the Monarchs.
  • Methodist's low offensive output wasn't for a lack of trying as the Monarchs attempted 14 shots, which was six more than the Wildcats.
  • On defense, the Monarchs allowed just one shot on goal during the entire second half, which was handled by Matthew Walker, who played the final 45 minutes.
  • The physicality of the match was evidenced by the 10 total yellow cards assessed —four for the Monarchs and six for Johnson & Wales.
  • The Wildcats defeated Methodist 6–0 last season, so the one–goal loss is an improved result for the Monarchs.
