Methodist Begins USA South Action with a Bang

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University men's soccer recorded eight or more goals for the second time within the last three matches, on the Monarchs' home pitch as well. This time it was against Mary Baldwin University to begin league play, USA South, and Methodist defeated the Fighting Squirrels 8-0 inside Duggins Soccer Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist defeats Mary Baldwin, 8-0
Records: Methodist 4-4-2 (1-0), Mary Baldwin 1-6-1 (0-1)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A very sluggish start by the Monarchs, and Mary Baldwin took advantage of this by going on an early attack, which includes a save for Methodist keeper Trey Gohr, a sophomore.
  • The momentum shifted in the Monarchs' favor after sophomore Steven Floyd scored the first goal of the contest, in the 24th minute. The assists were credited to Josh Mott, a sophomore, and Matthew Manzano, a junior.
  • The next two Methodist goals were within a minute of each other. First, sophomore Carson Stretz scored his first goal of the 2024 campaign after receiving a pass from freshman Cameron Lambert in the 34th minute. In the 35th minute, Mott found the back of the net himself following a feed from Mathias Navar, a freshman.
  • Cortez Herring, a graduate student, registered the last score in the 44th minute of the first half to give the Monarchs a 4-0 advantage. It took him two tries to get his first goal in the Green & Gold, as his first shot attempt was saved by the Fighting Squirrels goalie. The ball was not secured by Mary Baldwin though, which allowed Herring to fire off a second shot toward an open net.
  • Herring would also be involved in Methodist's fifth score as he was the helper on junior Sean Laney's goal, in the 60th minute.
  • Freshman Antonio Rubino Zapata recorded the next two goals, 63rd & 74th minutes, to increase the Monarchs' lead to 7-0. Sophomore Charles Drew was credited with an assist on the first score by Zapata.
  • Methodist tallied its final goal of the match in the 88th minute when junior Marco Vlahos put one past the keeper. Freshman Tyler Aromin assisted on the score.
NUMBERS
  • For the third time this season, Methodist has recorded 24 or more shots, with 11 being registered on net. The Monarchs are 3-0 in those games.
  • This was the first multi-goal performance of Zapata's young Methodist career.
  • Gohr, the starter, and Matthew Walker split time between the pipes and each one made a save while combining for a clean sheet.
