WINCHESTER, Va. On Sunday, September 8, Methodist University men's soccer finished out its weekend road trip with a visit to Shenandoah University, in a non-conference match. After
Mathias Navar almost game-tying goal was waved off, due to an offside call, the Monarchs found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision, in favor of the Hornets.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Shenandoah def. Methodist, 2-1
Records: Methodist 1-2-1, Hood 3-1-1
Location: Glo Fiber Field; Winchester, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shenandoah struck first, in the 26th minute, with a goal off a corner kick. Kyle Welch of the Hornets was the one who took the corner, and he sent a great volley into the box. Making contact with the ball first was teammate Carson Brooks, who headed the ball past the out stretched arm of Methodist's keeper and into the back of the net.
- The score remained 1-0 through halftime but soon changed less than two minutes into the second period. In the 47th minute, a foul in the Monarch's box was called, which awarded a penalty kick for Shenandoah. Hornet's Chinedu Ikem was the one that took the penalty shot, and he knocked it into the bottom right corner to double his team's score.
- In the 59th minute, sophomore Steven Floyd cut the deficit in half for the Monarchs with his second goal of the season. Graduate transfer Cortz Herring made a great up the field pass to Floyd, who split two Shenandoah defenders before beating the Hornet's keeper to his left.
- With under four minutes left in match, Methodist had two tremendous back-to-back chances to score the equalizer but were denied. First, Floyd tried a shot from 25-yards out, which would have beaten the keeper to his right, but hit the post. Then off the ricochet, Navar appeared to have tie the match with his diving header into an open net but was ruled offside.
