Second–Half Struggles Lead Methodist to Loss Versus LaGrange

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  After a first–half score by Steven Floyd gave the Methodist men's soccer team a 1–0 advantage over LaGrange College, the visiting Panthers brought a new game plan into the second half of Saturday's contest between the two squads. The Monarchs faced a heavy attack, conceding three goals with no answer in route to a 3–1 defeat on their home field.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: LaGrange defeats Methodist, 3-1
Records: Methodist 1-3-1, LaGrange 2-2-0
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Floyd's strike came in the 30th minute after Aidan Cohoon delivered a pass that led him towards the goal. LaGrange goalkeeper Andrew Cole came up to make a play on the ball, but Floyd's shot whizzed past, tailing from right to left.
  • Methodist saw several other chances in the first half, possessing the ball more than LaGrange but unable to capitalize aside from Floyd's goal. Cole made five saves for the Panthers, while Methodist keeper Matthew Walker was tasked with making just one first–half save.
  • LaGrange slowed its tempo down to start the second period and began to possess the ball more in its offensive zone. In the 66th minute, a pass by Robel Teshome into the Panthers' box found an open Lucas Duke who wasn't picked up by the Methodist defense, allowing Duke to send a shot past an unsuspecting Walker that resulted in an equalizing goal.
  • Just a little over two minutes later, the Panthers attacked again. A long shot by William Perry forced Walker to leap into the air, ultimately falling to the ground. Perry's shot was off the lower part of the crossbar and bounced high off the ground right in front of the empty net. As the Methodist defenders all paused to watch Perry's shot unfold, Roswell McCollum snuck through and was the first to reach the loose ball. Walker scrambled to his feet and attempted to prevent a shot by McCollum, but the Panthers' attacker headed the ball over Walker and into the net to give LaGrange the lead.
  • McCollum was able to score once more in the 77th minute on a breakaway by the Panthers, as Walker was again left alone to defend his net.
NUMBERS
  • It was a chippy game at times, as Methodist and LaGrange combined for 10 cards — just three for the Monarchs.
  • Aidan Cohoon's assist on Methodist's lone goal is the first assist of his young collegiate career. Meanwhile, it's Steven Floyd's third goal through five matches this season.
  • Second–half efficiency was key for the Panthers offensively, as they scored three goals on just four shot attempts. The Monarchs played solid defense overall but suffered lapses at crucial moments of the match, as evidenced by the three LaGrange goals.
