Monarchs Earn Draw in Danville

DANVILLE, Va.  Making a quick trip to face Averett University on Sunday, the Methodist men's soccer team returned to Fayetteville with their second tie of the season despite attempting four times as many shots as the Cougars.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist ties Averett, 0–0
Records: Methodist 1–3–2, Averett 3-1-2
Location: Daly Field; Danville, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist's Josh Mott took an early crack at the Averett goalkeeper, placing a shot on goal less than two minutes into the match, which was saved. The attempt was the only shot on goal by either side during the first 45–minute period. The Monarchs took six total shots in the first half while holding Averett to a single shot attempt.
  • Though the Monarchs increased their attack in the second half, the result was still the same. Firing 10 second–half shots, Methodist managed to place just one on goal — a strike by Steven Floyd in the 73rd minute — which was also saved by Averett's Tyler Yates.
NUMBERS
  • Methodist's Trey Gohr played 90 minutes in goal but did not face any shots on goal during the shutout.
  • This is Methodist's first defensive shutout of the season, and the first time the Monarchs have been shut out offensively.
  • This marks the first draw between the two teams since 2012, when a 1–1 tie was eventually settled with penalty kicks (Methodist defeated Averett in PKs 4–3).
UP NEXT
The Monarchs will travel back to Virginia on Wednesday for a match against Ferrum College at 5 p.m.
