Methodist Men’s Soccer Sets Program Record With Five Academic All-District Selections

11/26/2025 10:02:00 AM

GREENWOOD, Ind.  The College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced its 2025 Academic All-District teams for men's soccer on Tuesday, and Methodist University set a new program record with five Monarchs earning the prestigious honor: Angel Alarcon, Lucas Bender, Trey Gohr, Michael Iemma, and Sam Wiggins.

Junior Angel Alarcon was one of just five Monarchs to appear in all 21 games this season, earning 11 starts. The West Palm Beach, Florida, native delivered career-best offensive numbers with two goals and two assists, including the game-winner in a 2–1 road victory at Warren Wilson. He also secured a spot on the 2025 USA South Men's Soccer All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Lucas Bender made an immediate impact in his first season at Methodist, starting 18 of 21 matches. The Midland, North Carolina, product was a key piece of a defensive unit that recorded 10 shutouts, while also scoring the decisive goal in the USA South Tournament first-round win at Greensboro. Bender likewise earned a place on the 2025 USA South All-Tournament Team.

Junior goalkeeper Trey Gohr continued to establish himself among the conference's best. The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native posted a 1.12 goals-against average, the second-lowest in the USA South, while recording career-highs in saves (40) and solo shutouts (7). He, too, was named to the 2025 USA South All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Michael Iemma made one of the biggest jumps in workload this season, going from five appearances last year to 20 games played and 14 starts. The Bethpage, New York, native averaged over 48 minutes per contest and helped solidify a backline that held opponents to just three shots on goal per match.

Junior Sam Wiggins, also from Virginia Beach, played a career-high 19 games with seven starts as a steady defensive midfielder. Though not a high-volume statistic producer, his contributions were vital to a Methodist defense that consistently limited scoring opportunities.

The 2025-26 Academic All-District® Men's Soccer teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes women's soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Select Academic All-District® honorees were considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on December 16, 2025.
