Monarchs Roll Past Wildcats for First Win of the Season

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University women's lacrosse had its home opener Friday evening, a non-conference game against Linfield University, who traveled across the country from Oregon. In the first-ever meeting, the Monarchs defeated the Wildcats by a score of 19–8.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Linfield, 19–8
Records: Methodist 1-2, Linfield 0-1
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist got off to a fast start, as Rylie Sturgill and Mikayla Ramos (2) scored the first three goals less than three minutes into the contest. The Monarchs scored three additional goals (Ramos, Maddie Hagler, and Kennedy Martin) before Maya Wright scored Linfield's first goal. A fourth score by Ramos gave Methodist a 7-1 advantage heading into the second quarter.
  • Following the Wildcats' second goal of the game, Methodist recorded the next four goals to increase its lead to 11–2. During the last three and a half minutes before halftime, the Monarchs outscored Linfield 2-1 to take a ten-goal lead, 13–3.
  • Both teams would register three goals in the third quarter. The Wildcats were the first team to score out of the break, followed by Methodist with the next three as Hagler, Kaitlyn Coleman, and Erika Henry each put a shot in the back of the cage, pushing the score to 16–4. Goals by Savannah Irwin and Emma Baker increased Linfield's total to six before the end of the period.
  • Coleman, Surgill, and Ramos each registered one more goal to close out the Monarchs' scoring, while Mackenzie Kulick and Gabby Crist scored the last two goals for the Wildcats.
FAST FACTS
  • Ramos led all offensive players with six goals and five assists (career-high). Her 11 total points are also a new career high. She has now moved into the top five for the most career goals and points in Methodist history, No. 5 in both categories.
  • With four caused turnovers in today's game, Kennedy Martin became the second-ever Monarch to record 100 or more CTs in a career.
  • Even though Methodist held the statistical advantage in most categories, draw controls were dead even at 15 apiece.
