Monarchs Come Up Short Against Hornets

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University women's lacrosse welcomed the University of Lynchburg to Monarch Stadium on Saturday afternoon. This low-scoring contest remained close for three quarters before the Hornets pulled away in the fourth to claim a 9–5 win over the Monarchs.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Lynchburg def. Methodist, 9–5
Records: Methodist 1-3, Lynchburg 1-1
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mikayla Ramos scored first for Methodist, putting them on the scoreboard, but Lynchburg answered with the next two goals. Midway through the opening quarter, Sydney Dumas tied the game at one, and then, in the second quarter, a second goal by Dumas put the Hornets ahead 2-1.
  • With the same score coming out of halftime, each team recorded two goals in the third quarter to make it 4–3. Lynchburg's McKenna Steinau and the Monarchs' Kennedy Martin traded man-up goals before Dumas and Ramos scored again for their respective teams.
  • After being held in check for the first three periods, the Hornets were able to crack Methodist's defense as they doubled their score by recording four consecutive goals. Back-to-back scores from Martin did bring the Monarchs back to within three, 8–5, but time was not on Methodist side to mount a comeback.
FAST FACTS
  • Martin and Ramos were the only goal scorers for Methodist, as they tallied three and two, respectively.
  • Senior Ashley Fuentes got the start in net for the Monarchs. She made a game-high 13 saves while allowing nine goals.
  • Along with Fuentes, defenders Brooke Murrell and Ainsley McGinn had impressive performances for Methodist. Murrell led the game with four caused turnovers, a career-high, while McGinn set a new career-high in ground ball recoveries with six.
