Monarchs Win on Day One of Armstrong Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Playing host to the University of Hartford on the first day of the 2025 Armstrong Invitational, the Methodist baseball team squeaked out a one–run victory on Saturday. The Monarchs scored the first six runs of the game before fending off a late–innings rally by the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs built up a 6–0 lead behind the solid pitching efforts of Presley Patterson, who tossed six scoreless innings. During that time, the Monarchs slowly accumulated runs, scoring two in the first, one in the second, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
  • Brandon Mauger recorded three RBIs over that span, batting in one runner during three of his four plate appearances.
  • Up by six, the Monarchs saw their advantage shrink when Alek Popovich notched a two–run homer for the Hawks off Jackson Kuhn in the seventh inning.
  • After adding a run in the eighth, Hartford pulled within one when Ryan Knight launched another two–run shot to right–center field, this time taking Josh Plisko yard in the ninth with only one out. Plisko gathered himself and was able to force the final two batters to ground out.
 
STAT FACTS
  • The Hawks loaded the bases in the first and sixth innings but came away empty handed on both occasions.
  • Mauger finished the day 2–for–3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. He would've been a perfect 3–for–3 with two doubles had he not been called out on an appeal to first after his second at–bat.
  • Blake Freeman was the other batter for Methodist to record multiple hits on the day, batting 2–for–4 while drawing a walk and scoring a run. Freeman and Mauger batted first and second for the Monarchs, combining for all but one of Methodist's hits on the day.

Methodist plays twice on Sunday, taking on Hanover College at 1:30 p.m. and then facing the University of Mary Washington at 5 p.m. Day two of the Armstrong Invitational starts at 10 a.m. with a matchup between the University of Hartford Hawks and the Hanover Panthers.
