Methodist Drops Two on Final Day of Armstrong Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  On Sunday, Methodist University baseball played its last two games of the 2025 Armstrong Invitational, facing Hanover College first and then versus the University of Mary Washington. The Monarchs ultimately lost both contests as they fell 7–1 to the Panthers before getting run-ruled, 14–3, by the Eagles in seven innings.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Hanover def. Methodist, 7–1; Mary Washington def. Methodist, 14–3 (7 Inn.)
Records: Methodist 5-3; Hanover 2-1; Mary Washington 3-1
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • The first three innings were quiet before Methodist made some noise in the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Brandon Mauger and Jackson Deal and a Banks Hartman walk loaded the bases for the Monarchs with no outs. Methodist could only score one run in the inning as Caleb Rogers drove in Deal on an RBI single.
  • In the fifth inning, the Monarchs had a chance to add to their total as they had runners on second and third with just one out but were unable to score.
  • With one swing of his bat, Jake Danneman gave Hanover its first lead of the day as he crushed a 3-run home run over the left-field fence.
  • The Panthers added four more runs in the eighth inning to increase their lead to 7–1.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Mary Washington claimed an early 1–0 lead in the second inning before hammering the Methodist pitching staff for a combined 13 runs during the third and fourth innings.
  • Trailing 14–0, the Monarchs scored their only runs of the ballgame in the sixth. Joey Sweeney led the inning off with a single before coming around to score on a Mauger triple. After two consecutive walks, Justin Blunt looped a shallow single to center field to allow Mauger and Deal to cross home plate for 2 RBIs.
STAT FACTS
  • Mauger was the only Methodist batter to record a hit in both games, as he went a combined 3-for-8 with an RBI.
  • Freshman Ian Swanson had another impressive outing in Game One. He got the start and a no-decision after he scattered four hits across six scoreless innings while striking out five batters, and surrendered three walks.
  • Seniors Brice Herring and Chase Carroll were the most effective pitchers in the second game. Herring went an inning, giving up one hit, and had a 1:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Carroll tossed the last two innings, struck out three Eagle batters, and allowed one hit.
UP NEXT
Methodist is off until next weekend when the team begins a three-game series against Wheaton College (Mass.) on Friday, February 28. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
