Methodist Exploits Wheaton's Defense to Win Game One of the Series

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University baseball opened up its three-game series against Wheaton (Mass.) College on Friday with a 7–4 victory. After trailing to begin the game, the host Monarchs took advantage of Lyon miscues to secure their sixth win at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Wheaton, 7–4
Records: Methodist 6-3, Wheaton 0-1
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Playing in its first game of the 2025 season, Wheaton came out swinging to start the ballgame, leading to a pair of extra-base hits and runners on second and third base. Timmy Wagner was the next Lyon to step up to the plate, and he delivered the first two runs of the contest, smacking a single to left field to score both runners on base.
  • In the second inning, Methodist was able to get one run back with some help from Wheaton's defense. After senior Tristen Melvin registered a base hit for the Monarchs, the ball rolled to the fence due to a misplay by the Lyons outfield, allowing Melvin to make it to third. Then, fellow senior Caleb Rogers brought in Melvin on a sacrifice fly.
  • Wheaton reclaimed a two-run lead, 3–1, in the fourth inning, as a walk, a ground out, and two wild pitches scored a run.
  • The Lyons hung onto their advantage for another couple of innings before a four-run sixth inning gave Methodist a 5–3 lead. The Monarchs' first two batters, Joey Sweeney and Jackson Deal, reached first and second after recording a single and walk, respectively. Sweeney then came around to score on a Brandon Mauger RBI double. A few batters later, Methodist had bases loaded with two outs when a wild throw to first base cost Wheaton three more runs.
  • Before the ninth inning, the Monarchs scored two additional runs to take a 7–3 lead heading into the Lyons' final at-bats. After Methodist got two of the first three Wheaton batters out, Tommy Beauregard drove in the last Lyons run on an RBI single to center field.
STAT FACTS
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Methodist and Wheaton.
  • Mauger and Banks Engle were the only two Monarchs to have a multi–hit game. Mauger went 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Engle recorded two base hits in four plate appearances.
  • Getting credit for the win was senior Brice Herring, who pitched three scoreless innings. He only gave up one hit and struck out three batters, matching a career high.
