Monarchs Split With Wheaton in Extra–Innings Showcase

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Extra innings were abundant on Saturday as the Methodist baseball team and the Wheaton College Lyons played an 11–inning contest followed by a 10–inning game. The Monarchs earned a hard–fought victory in game one but came up short in the latter affair of the afternoon.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Wheaton, 10–9 (11 innings); Wheaton def. Methodist 6–5 (10 innings)
Records: Methodist 7-4, Wheaton 1-2
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Wheaton amassed an early 6–0 lead with two runs in the first inning and a grand slam in the second. Methodist chipped away at the deficit with a run in the third and three in the fourth – two of which were batted in on a triple by Austin Rinzel.
  • The team's traded runs in the sixth inning, then two Monarchs rounded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a Banks Engle single through the left side of the infield to tie the game at 7–7.
  • The Lyons retook the lead when they scored two runs in the top of the eighth, and unable to answer in the next frame, the Monarchs had their backs against the wall heading into the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Rinzel singled, then stole second base. A double by Engle brought Rinzel home, then Jackson Deal batted in the tying run.
  • With freshman Michael Heis holding Wheaton scoreless in the 10th inning and through two–thirds of the 11th, Brandon Humphreys came in to face one batter, forcing a flyout.
  • Rinzel led the bottom of the 11th off with a single to right field, then stole second during the next at–bat. That brought up Jackson Kuhn, whose first hit of the season delivered the game–winning run.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Wheaton again scored first, this time waiting until the second inning to put two runs on the board – both of which were unearned, keeping Ian Swanson's 0.00 ERA unblemished. Methodist answered in the bottom frame with one run on an RBI single from Rinzel.
  • Brandon Mauger and Banks Hartman logged back–to–back doubles in the third, with Mauger scoring Deal before being batted in himself. In the bottom of the fourth, Rinzel stole third, then got up and scored after an errant throw by the catcher sent the ball rolling into the outfield.
  • With a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, the Lyons took a 5–4 lead. The Monarchs were able to score an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. After two innings of gridlock, Wheaton scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th, to which Methodist had no answer.
