Monarchs Split With Sweet Briar

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Facing off with the Vixens of Sweet Briar College, the Methodist softball team saw both highs and lows on Sunday, earning a two–run victory in game one of the doubleheader before suffering a two–run loss during the latter half of the afternoon.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Sweet Briar, 5–3; Sweet Briar def. Methodist, 9–7
Records: Methodist 4–4; Sweet Briar 2–2
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • After conceding a run in the top of the first, the Monarchs answered with a run of their own as Grace Hobbs brought Devan Wenger across home. Methodist took a 2–1 lead in the second inning when a Hannah Lovick sacrifice fly sent a run in for a score.
  • The Vixens scored a tying run in the top of the fourth, but the Monarchs were quick to respond in the bottom of the inning, piecing together four hits for three runs. Sweet Briar scored once in the sixth, but Methodist held on for the two–run victory.
  • Emma Neeley pitched the complete game for the Monarchs, allowing just two earned runs. She walked two batters and gave up just four hits while also earning four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • With bases loaded in the top of the first, Sweet Briar's Abi Sawyers brought three runs home with a base–clearing double, making a statement to start the second game of the afternoon.
  • Methodist answered confidently with two runs in the next frame. Then in the bottom of the third, Rachel Blanchard blasted a ball over the center field fence to tie the game at 3–3.
  • The Vixens benefited from three Methodist errors in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of the miscues on their way to a three–run inning.
  • Down 9–3 entering the final frame, the Monarchs stormed from behind as the first five batters reached base, pushing the score to 9–5 with just one out. A fly ball by Hobbs brought Methodist's sixth run of the game in, and a Rachel Lawson single during the next at–bat batted in the seventh run for the home team. Unfortunately, the comeback effort fell short with the tying run at the plate.
NUMBERS
  • Blanchard continued to turn heads, launching her first homer of the season (the fourth of her career). She went 3–for–4 at the plate in each game, contributing two RBIs and scoring three times.
