JUST THE FACTS
Final score: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 56–50
Records: Methodist 11–8 (6-4 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 12–7 (9-3)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist opened the game on an 8-0 run with senior Kiley Hicks making three of the first four baskets. The next three minutes of game action saw the Monarchs maintain a seven-point lead as the two teams traded points until the scoreboard read 14-7.
- After getting off to a slow start, N.C. Wesleyan would flip the contest in its favor as the Battling Bishops registered ten unanswered points to take a 17-14 advantage early in the second quarter. From the three-minute mark in the first period to 7:48 in the second, Methodist was held scoreless until senior Melissa D'Oleo snapped the five-minute scoring drought with a steal and a layup. That also sparked the Monarchs to go on a 6-0 run and reclaim a 20-17 lead. The last four and a half minutes before halftime was then controlled by N.C. Wesleyan as Methodist was outscored 10-2.
- At the start of the third quarter, Aneesa Irizarry and D'Oleo tallied a quick four points for the Monarchs to get them within one, 27-26, of the lead, but then, a 7-2 run by Battling Bishops gave them a six-point advantage again. N.C. Wesleyan would score one more point than Methodist to close out the third, which put the Battling Bishops up by seven, 39-32, heading into the fourth period.
- The first couple of minutes of the fourth saw both teams match each other point-for-point, with Hicks scoring all five for the Monarchs, bringing the score to 42-37. A string of seven points by N.C. Wesleyan would then make it a 12-point contest with under seven minutes remaining. Methodist did its best to get back within striking distance of the lead, 55-50, but unfortunately, time was not on the Monarch's side.
MORE TO IT
- For the first time in exactly two months, D'Oleo reached double figures as she recorded a team-high 12 points for Methodist. Right behind her was Hicks with 11.
- Both of these teams had nearly identical shooting totals from the field and at the free throw line, but it would be the Battling Bishops who had the edge from behind the arc. N.C. Wesleyan shot 71.4% after making five of its seven three-point attempts, while the Monarchs did not convert any three-pointers.
