Methodist Falls Short Versus Berry in Season Opener

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.  Facing Berry College for the fourth straight season in non–conference play, the Methodist women's lacrosse team stepped onto the field on Saturday for the first time in 2025. Though the last three matchups between these teams had come down to the wire, the result was not as close this time around, as the Monarchs suffered a nine–point defeat.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Berry def. Methodist, 17–8
Records: Methodist 0-1, Berry 1-0
Location: Valhalla Field; Mount Berry, Georgia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Monarchs conceded the first goal of the match, Mikayla Ramos facilitated two scores for Methodist, dishing passes to Layla Wiesenfeld and Maddie Hagler for back–to–back goals. Rylie Sturgill continued the scoring run for Methodist, netting a goal on the first shot of her collegiate career. Methodist maintained the lead, trading two goals with Berry for a 5–3 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • Starting the second quarter a player up, the Vikings struck almost instantly. Less than two minutes later, Kaitlyn Coleman returned fire, scoring on a free position attempt. From there, Berry scored three consecutive goals to close out the half, surpassing Methodist by one score.
  • The goals continued to pour in from the Vikings, who found the back of the net four times during the third period, for which the Monarchs had no response. Berry outscored Methodist 6–2 in the final frame, distancing themselves for a nine–goal win.
FAST FACTS

  • Methodist was unable to capitalize on its free–position attempts, scoring only once on eight free–position shots. The Vikings went 2–for–3 on free positions shots.
