Monarchs Challenged Against Ranked Lynchburg

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Hosting the fourth–ranked team in Division III, the Methodist baseball team faced pitching woes on Wednesday, falling to the University of Lynchburg by a score of 15–4. It's the most runs the Monarchs have conceded in a single game this season.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: #4 Lynchburg def. Methodist, 15–4
Records: Methodist 11-6, Lynchburg 13-2
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Presley Patterson struck out three batters in the first inning but not before walking two and giving up an RBI double. After walking his fourth batter of the afternoon to start the third inning, the Monarchs called to the bullpen and Jackson Kuhn took the mound.
  • The first batter Kuhn faced knocked a home run down the right–field line. Two more runs scored in the frame, giving the Hornets a 5–0 lead.
  • The Monarchs had their big inning in the fourth, loading the bases and scoring two runs on a Caleb Rogers double that bounced off the right–center field wall. Banks Engle batted in a third run, pulling Methodist within two.
  • The Monarchs had the wind slowly depleted from their sails in an excruciating fifth inning that saw Lynchburg put up nine runs. Had Methodist escaped the inning error–free, the Hornets would have been held to two runs, but instead they added seven runs of the unearned variety. The Hornets added a final run in the sixth, and both teams remained scoreless for the rest of the contest.
STAT FACTS
  • Methodist pitchers struggled to find the strike zone, walking a season–high 13 batters. The previous single–game high this season was eight.
  • On the flip side, Lynchburg pitchers stacked up 14 strikeouts, including Trent Judd, who struck out a career–high seven batters across three relief innings.
UP NEXT
The Monarchs turn their attention toward conference play with a trip to William Peace University on the horizon. The teams face off on Friday at 4 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday. It will be the first games the Monarchs have played away from home this season.
