Monarchs Earn A Pair of Road Victories on Saturday

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  The Methodist University men's tennis team was in the Queen City on Saturday, playing at Johnson C. Smith University in morning before taking on Johnson & Wales University of Charlotte in the afternoon. Against the Golden Bulls, an NCAA Division II team, the Monarchs claimed a 6–1 victory, and then, followed that up with a 7–0 sweep of the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
MATCH ONE (Johnson C. Smith)
  • Methodist took a 1–0 match lead in doubles, as the Monarchs won all three flights, including two that resulted in 6-2 decisions.
  • After the Monarchs' Matthew Hurley picked up a 6-0, 6-1 dub in No. 1 singles, Mlungisi Mhlanga won the only Johnson C. Smith flight of the day, at the No. 2 court, beating Wills Belser 6-1, 6-2. Harry Crokam got Methodist back on track with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles.
  • Putting the Monarchs up 4­–1, and securing the overall match victory, was freshman Ethan Carlyle, who won on court four 6-1, 6-2. In the battle of No. 6s, Methodist's Decklan Rayner earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while Drew Guarnieri triumph against Jeffery Theophilius-Thompsom of the Golden Bull 6-1, 6-3.
MATCH TWO (Johnson & Wales)
  • For the second time today, the Monarchs went ahead 1–0 after taking all three double flights.
  • The Methodist trio of Hurley (No. 1), Guarnieri (No. 4), and Christian Tihanovich (No. 5) each won their respective matches, dropping just one game between either set, to clinch the Monarchs second match victory.
  • Methodist's Carlyle and Cameron Roth defeated their Wildcat counterparts by the same set scores of 6-3, 6-4, while Crokam of the Monarchs played in the toughest battle but still managed to come out on top 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
UP NEXT
Methodist has a quick turnaround as the team heads back to Fayetteville to host Roanoke College on Sunday, March 23. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 AM.
