FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Posting back–to–back shutouts for the first time in program history, the Methodist women's lacrosse team held Pfeiffer University scoreless on Tuesday, defeating the Falcons 23–0.
Ashley Fuentes played the first half in goal for the Monarchs, recording two saves and earning the 26th victory of her career. She becomes the program's all–time winningest goalie, surpassing her former teammate Jem Golombeski, who was credited with 25 wins in net from 2020–2023.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Pfeiffer, 23–0
Records: Methodist 7–4 (4–0 USA South), Pfeiffer 1–6 (0–3 USA South)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist put 11 goals on the scoreboard in the first quarter, with Kaitlyn Coleman recording three of the final four scores. Rylie Sturgill, Kennedy Martin and Mikayla Ramos each tallied two apiece during the period also. The Monarchs were able to create their own shots, proving so by scoring with no assist on eight occasions during the opening quarter.
- Hardly slowing down in the second period, Ramos dished out assists to Sturgill and Macey Blackburn before Blackburn scored once on her own. Layla Wiesenfeld got in on the scoring as the Monarchs surged to a 17–0 halftime advantage.
- In the second half, head coach Kiersten McKay tried out some different looks, giving scoring opportunities to younger players as well as some of her more often defensive–oriented athletes. Abigail Wilson was the first to score in the third quarter, marking the fourth goal of her collegiate career and just the third game in which she has scored in. Next was Ainsley McGinn, whose two goals this season have come in consecutive games.
- The fourth quarter saw just two goals — both of which were scored by first–time goal scorer Allye Carter. She scored once in the second minute of the period and again with under two minutes left to play.
FAST FACTS
- This is the fifth shutout under McKay and seventh in program history. It ties the largest scoring margin in a shutout win, matching the 23–goal shutout at William Peace University nearly one year ago on March 29, 2024.
- The Monarchs held their opponent to just two shots — both of which came in the first half. Methodist defenders have conceded just six shots across the team's last three games.
- Ramos led the team in points with seven (three goals, four assists), while Sturgill and Coleman were the game's leading goal scorers with four each.
