Monarchs Overpowered by Meredith in Road Loss

RALEIGH, N.C.  In a battle between two undefeated USA South teams, Methodist University traveled to Meredith College on Wednesday evening. The Avenging Angels proved too much to handle as they handed the Monarchs a 21–4 loss at the Meredith Athletic Field and Track Complex.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score:
Meredith def. Methodist, 21–4
Records: Methodist 7–5 (4–1 USA South), Meredith 11–2 (5–0)
Location: Meredith Athletic Field and Track Complex; Raleigh, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams were unable to generate much offense during the opening four minutes of the contest until Meredith broke the scoreless tie. The Avenging Angels scored four goals, extending their lead to 5–0, before Maddie Hagler registered the first Methodist goal, off a feed from Erika Henry. Two additional Meredith tallies would make it a 7–1 score heading into the second quarter.
  • After the Avenging Angels pushed it to a 10–1 game, Kennedy Martin recorded the second Monarchs goal midway through the period. Two more conceded goals by Methodist increased the deficit to double digits, 12–2, when the game reached halftime.
  • In the second half, Meredith tacked on nine more goals while the Monarchs scored twice, with Kaitlyn Coleman and Hagler scoring. Coleman's tally came in the third quarter on a free position, and then Hagler scored her second goal in the fourth after receiving a pass from E. Henry again.

FAST FACTS

  • The loss snaps Methodist's 14-game win streak against conference opponents in the regular season, the longest in program history.
  • The Monarch offense was held in check by Meredith. Methodist typically averages just over 30 shots a game but was restricted to ten today.
  • On defense, Martin and Ainsley McGinn led the Monarchs with two caused turnovers each, while McGinn also had a team-high three groundballs.

UP NEXT
