Methodist Drops Two on Final Day of Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C.  On Sunday, Methodist University softball lost its last two games at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic. First, the Monarchs dropped a 7–6 heartbreaker to Piedmont University, then were run-ruled, 8–0, by nationally ranked (#7) Christopher Newport University in six innings.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Piedmont def. Methodist, 7–6; Christopher Newport def. Methodist, 8–0 (6 Inn.)
Records: Methodist 5-11; Piedmont 8-9; #7 Christopher Newport 12-0
Location: Walnut Creek Softball Complex; Raleigh, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (vs. Piedmont)
  • Piedmont's leadoff batter, Mandi Peretti, got on base with a single back up the middle before reaching second on a Jasmine Lowery sacrifice bunt. Peretti then came around to score on a Methodist throwing error, after she stole third base.
  • In the third inning, the Monarchs had runners standing on second and third base following a pair of hits and a stolen base. Both runners would score on an Alyssa Rivas double, giving Methodist a 2–1 lead.
  • The Monarchs scored four more runs in the fifth inning, extending their advantage to 6–1. The first three Methodist batters reached safely to load the bases before Rivas stepped up to the plate and recorded two more RBIs on a base hit to left center. A sac fly from Reilly Howell drove in another Monarch run, then two batters later, Lynsey Plunkett hit a single through the left side of the infield to bring in the fourth Methodist run.
  • Ultimately, those were the finals runs the Monarchs generated, as the Lions scored six between the sixth and seventh innings to get a come-from-behind victory. In the sixth, Piedmont cut the deficit down to one, 6–5, with a four-run inning, then registered the final two runs necessary to complete the comeback in the seventh.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (vs. Christopher Newport)
  • Christopher Newport opened up the ballgame by scoring three runs. A trio of doubles helped the Captains score two runs in the first inning, and then in the second inning, Kendall Bentley launched a solo home run over the center field fence.
  • In the fifth inning, Brooke Zuber scored just as many runs as Christopher Newport's lead with one swing of the bat, as she smashed a 3-run homer to center. This pushed the Captain's advantage to 6–0.
  • An inning later, Christopher Newport run-ruled, 8–0, the Monarchs following a walk-off double by Cora Thomas, who drove in two runs.
NUMBERS
  • For the second day in a row, Rivas was Methodist's best hitter. She went 4-for-7 at the plate and accounted for four RBIs, all against Piedmont, which also matches a career high.
  • The only other Monarch with a hit in both games was Alexandra Edwards, two versus the Lions and one against the Captains.
UP NEXT
Methodist will look to get back into its winning ways at home on Monday, March 10, as the Monarchs welcome the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington in a doubleheader. The first pitch of Game One is scheduled for 11:30 AM.
