Monarchs Take Down William Peace on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Playing the final home match of the 2025 regular season, the Methodist men's tennis team took down USA South foe William Peace University on Wednesday, defeating the Pacers 5–2. The Monarchs honored their graduating seniors before the match, including Drew Guarnieri, William Johnston and Royce South. After the match, head coach Scott Handback was celebrated for earning his 100th career win as a head coach.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs claimed the doubles point with a sweep of all three matches. In the top match, Matthew Hurley and Decklan Rayner picked up a 6–2 victory, followed by a 6–1 win on court No. 3 for Harry Crokam and Ethan Carlyle. The final doubles duo to collect a win was Guarnieri and Cameron Roth, taking the No. 2 matchup by a score of 6–3.
  • Crokam was first to finish in the singles round, defeating his opponent in the No. 2 match with sets of 6–1 and 6–0. Hurley — the reigning USA South Player of the Week — took care of business once again in the top match, winning 6–1, 6–1.
  • Carlyle claimed a win in the No. 3 match, taking the first set 6–2 before finishing off the match with a 6–1 score in the second set. Next in line was Guarnieri, who managed back–to–back set wins of 6–2 in the No. 4 pairing.
  • Brady Mendler represented the Monarchs in the fifth singles match, falling in sets of 6–1 and 6–3. The final match came down to a tiebreaker after Johnston won his first set 7–5 but dropped the next 7–5. Not without exceptional fight, Johnston ultimately lost the tiebreaker by a score of 10–7.
UP NEXT
Methodist will travel to Brevard on Saturday for a match with the Tornados, who are currently ranked 71st in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top–75 rankings.
