Monarchs Clinch Spot in USA South Women's Lacrosse Championship

RALEIGH, N.C.  Squaring off with Piedmont University in the semifinal round of the USA South Tournament, the Methodist women's lacrosse team led from start to finish on Thursday, avenging the loss to the Lions that came during the regular season. The Monarchs scored five of the first six goals, accelerating to a 14–11 victory.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores:
Methodist def. Piedmont,14 –11
Records: Methodist 12–6; Piedmont 13–6
Location: Meredith College; Raleigh, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarch offense was hot from the jump, with Kennedy Martin and Rylie Sturgill scoring back–to–back goals within the first 35 seconds of play. After a Piedmont score, three more Methodist goals ensued (two of which Martin assisted on), giving the Monarchs a 5–1 advantage with 4:30 left to go in the first quarter.
  • The Lions scored the final goal of the first period and the first goal of the second quarter, but Kaitlyn Coleman and Layla Wiesenfeld were quick to answer with a pair of scores for Methodist. Piedmont scored three of the last five goals in the period, making the halftime score 9–6 in favor of the Monarchs.
  • Martin netted the first goal of the second half as the teams traded two goals apiece during the third quarter. With scores by Mikayla Ramos and Sturgill to begin the fourth period, Methodist boasted a 13–8 lead with under 12 minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Piedmont scored the next two but still faced a 13–10 deficit with less than four minutes to go. A final score by Ramos put the Monarchs in front by four with less than three minutes left, which proved to be enough for the win.
FAST FACTS
  • Martin and Brooke Murrell led the Monarchs with four ground balls each and three caused turnovers apiece. Martin was one of three goal scorers on the day to contribute three scores, standing alongside Ramos and Sturgill in that category.
  • Methodist made two out of five free–position shots — the most successful conversions since scoring five free–position goals against Pfeiffer University on March 25.
