ASHLAND, Va. Methodist University baseball made a splash to begin the Ashland Regional, as the Monarchs blanked 11th-ranked SUNY Brockport 10–0 on Friday morning at Hugh Stephens Field.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. No. 11 SUNY Brockport, 10–0
Records: Methodist 33-13; SUNY Brockport 36–4–2
Location: Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park; Ashland, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With Methodist being the fourth seed in the region, the Monarchs batted first, and they wasted no time taking a lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. The first two Methodist batters, Jackson Deal and Brandon Mauger, reached base safely before Tristen Melvin laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. A sacrifice fly by Caleb Rogers plated the opening run before Austin Rinzel dropped a bunt single to score the second run. The Monarchs recorded their third run on an RBI single from Israel Ortiz, then he got himself in a run down and kept the defense occupied long enough to allow the fourth Methodist run to score.
- In the third inning, Melvin scored one run, 5–0, for the Monarchs on a solo home run over the right-center fence.
- Three more runs in the fourth inning pushed Methodist to an 8–0 advantage. Parker Evans and Mauger had an RBI double while Deal registered an RBI single.
- Evans also caused more damage later in the game for the Monarchs, as he recorded RBI singles in the sixth and eighth innings.
NUMBERS
- Methodist's starting pitcher, Kyle Molivas, was masterful on the mound. The senior pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.
- Offensively, the Monarchs were led by Evans, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Six other Methodist batters also registered an RBI.
- Today's victory is the first NCAA Tournament win for the baseball team since the 2013 season. It was also the Monarch's first tournament shutout since 2004.
- Going into the contest, SUNY Brockport led all of Division III with a team ERA of 2.67. That will change as the Golden Eagles surrendered a season-high ten runs.
UP NEXT
Following the second game of the regional today, Methodist will face Messiah University on Saturday, May 17, at Noon. If the Monarchs defeat the Falcons in the winner's bracket, they will advance to Sunday, while a loss forces Methodist to play a second game on Saturday, which would be an elimination game against the winner of the Brockport and Randolph-Macon game.
