HARRISONBURG, Va. The Methodist women's lacrosse team turned in a dominant road performance Saturday afternoon, earning its first victory of the season with a 14–2 non-conference win over Eastern Mennonite University at EMU Turf Field.
The afternoon was highlighted by a milestone moment, as senior
Layla Wiesenfeld recorded her 100th career goal in a Methodist uniform. She becomes just the 15th player in program history to reach the century mark.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Eastern Mennonite, 14–2
Records: Methodist 1-1, Eastern Mennonite 0-1
Location: EMU Turf Field; Harrisonburg, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wiesenfeld wasted little time getting the Monarchs on the board, finishing a feed from fellow senior Cheyenne Burton for the game's opening goal. Eastern Mennonite answered just over a minute later to even the score at 1–1, but that would be as close as the Royals would get.
- After a brief scoring lull, Wiesenfeld and Burton connected once again to put Methodist back in front. Sophomore Rylie Sturgill added another goal late in the opening quarter, giving the Monarchs a 3–1 advantage after one.
- The second quarter featured steady Methodist control. Freshman Amadis Levasa scored her first two collegiate goals in the frame — the first unassisted and the second off an assist from senior Brooke Murrell — extending the Monarch lead to 5–1 at halftime.
- Methodist put the contest out of reach in a decisive third quarter, erupting for seven goals to build a commanding 12–1 lead. Wiesenfeld scored twice in the period, including her historic 100th career goal. Abigail Fritzsche netted her first collegiate goal during the surge, while Alana Rabon, Sturgill, Murrell, and Levasa each added a goal in the quarter as the Monarch offense found its rhythm.
- The Monarchs closed out the afternoon by outscoring Eastern Mennonite 2–1 in the fourth quarter, with Sturgill and Levasa each tallying once more to secure the 14–2 victory.
