Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- Methodist University suffered a 2-0 loss to visiting Christopher Newport in men's soccer Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs' record fell to 7-7 overall and to 2-2 in the USA South, while the Captains improve to 11-3-1 overall and to 4-0 in the Conference.
The game remained scoreless until late in the second half. Christopher Newport crossed a corner kick to the near post which was half cleared by the Methodist defense to Captains freshman Cliff Kipper. Kipper caught a deflection and went in low, beating Methodist goalkeeper

The Monarchs pushed forward in the closing minutes of the game to try and come back from a 1-0 deficit. An overturn in possession allowed the Captains to attack. Winston Mattheisen gained control on the edge of the 18 yard box and cut inside his defender to get a hard, low shot past the Methodist goalkeeper to give Christpoher Newport the 2-0 advantage.
Kyle Beach made five saves for Methodist, and Matt Tengs made four saves for Christopher Newport.
Methodist will travel to Lynchburg on Wednesday, October 15. Kickoff is slated for 4 pm.
