Christopher Newport Runs Past Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport took the early lead and went on to defeat Methodist 38-14.

Christopher Newport (5-1, 4-0) kicked off to the Monarchs (1-6, 0-4) to start the game, but Methodist could not get the first down.  The Captains took over and drove down to the Methodist 36-yard line, but on third and 10, Methodist senior Chris Oden got the stop at the 34-yard line forcing the punt.  The Monarchs had a 73-yard drive, but Mario Miralles' 24-yard field goal missed giving the ball back to the Captains. Christopher Newport picked up two first downs but punted to the Monarchs' 20-yard line.  Brian Hopkins had the fair catch, but a penalty forced Methodist back to the 10-yard line.  Methodist could not get out and a punt by Shawn Dodd gave Christopher Newport the ball on the Methodist 32-yard line.

The Captains started the second quarter with two runs from Tunde Ogun capped off by a 16-yard touchdown run for the first score of the game.  Jay Graham's extra point gave the Captains the 7-0 lead.  Methodist drove down to the Christopher Newport 31-yard line, but Ryan Wever returned a fumble for a 69-yard touchdown run with 10:44 to go in the quarter.  Methodist had another opportunity for a field goal, but the 31-yard attempt just missed.  The Captains missed a field goal on their next possession for Methodist to take over with 1:19 to go in the half.  Unable to get a first down, the Monarchs punted with 50 seconds to go.  Methodist got the ball back on a fumble, but Methodist quarterback Erik Teague pitched it to Corey McGuire who was intercepted at the 2-yard line to end the half.

Methodist kicked off to start the second half and Christopher Newport used a 60-yard drive for Ogun to finish up with a 1-yard touchdown run.  Graham's kick gave the Captains a 21-0 lead.  On the Monarchs' second possession of the half, Teague connected with Chris Peoples for a 41-yard touchdown pass.  Miralles converted the extra point attempt.  Methodist stopped a Christopher Newport drive, but Graham made a 35-yard field goal attempt to lead 24-7.  

The Monarchs opened the fourth quarter with a 72-yard drive to finish up wtih an 8-yard rush from freshman Reggie Scales for a touchdown.  Miralles' extra point moved Methodist within ten.  The Captains were on their own 40-yard line on their next possession when Ogun broke through for the 60-yard touchdown run.  Teague was intercepted in the endzone and the Captains would score once more to take the 38-14 win.

Teague threw 25-for-37 for 351 yards passing and added 20 yards rushing.  Scales led Methodist with 36 yards rushing.  Peoples caught 12 passes for 184 yards.  Ogun ran for 254 yards on the day with three touchdowns for the Captains.  

Chris Oden led the Methodist defense with 11 tackles while Troy Glover had ten tackles.  Adrin Diggs had nine tackles for the Captains.

The Monarchs will host Maryville on Saturday at 1 pm to coincide with the Homecoming festivities.
