RALEIGH, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team traveled to Raleigh Saturday to finish the regular season at Peace College. The Monarchs won 3-0 over Mary Baldwin (25-14, 25-19, 25-22) and 3-1 against Peace (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-17)
With both wins, Methodist stands at 17-14 overall and 8-10 in the conference for a tie for fifth in the USA South standings. The tournament seedings are still being finalized, but the Monarchs will travel for a quarterfinal on Tuesday.
In the first match, Mary Baldwin took an early 1-5 lead in the first set, but the Monarchs battled back to tie behind the serving of
Samantha Arrington. Methodist took a 20-11 lead on a kill from
Taylor Cates.
Laura Gilbert finished off the set with a kill to win 25-14. The Squirrels kept the second set close with the score tied at 15-15, but Methodist broke away and won 25-19 on back to back Monarchs' kills from
Allison Averitt and
Jalesty Washington. Methodist completed the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third set backed by eight kills from Washington.
Washington finished with 17 kills while
Sara Yeatman had 11. Gilbert added eight and Averitt had six.
Kelsey Yates had 40 assists and
Jordan Grady led with 17 digs. Yeatman added 14 digs.
Peace jumped on the Monarchs early in the second match and won the first set 23-25. Methodist came back in the second set and took a 10-4 lead on a kill by Gilbert. Peace tied the set at 16 and 18, but the Monarchs finished with the 25-20 win to tie the match at one. Methodist led 22-18 in the third set and had set point at 24-20, but the Pacers came back to move within one at 24-23 on a service ace. Yeatman helped the Monarchs finish it off with a kill for the 25-23 win. Methodist took advantage of Peace errors in the fourth set to lead 20-14. They finished off with the 25-17 victory to win the match.
Yeatman led the team with 18 kills while Washington had 15. Yates dished out 46 assists and Grady had 25 digs.
