SALEM, Va. - In a rematch from last season's NCAA Tournament first round game, it was the same result as Roanoke came away with a 3-1 victory over the Methodist women's soccer team. The Monarchs and Roanoke are now both 1-2 this season.
The Maroon scored first with a goal in the seventh minute from Margaret Houston, but Methodist came back and tied the game at one with a goal from freshman Danielle Minichello on the assist from junior Whitney Roberson. Roanoke snuck another goal in just before halftime on a header from Meredith Grunewald with just five seconds remaining.
The Monarchs could not find another goal as Roanoke struck again with a goal in the 61st minute from Kristen McCoy. Sophomore goalkeeper Kasey Nichols made a couple of great saves for the Monarchs, but Roanoke held on for the 3-1 win.
Nichols finished with eight saves on 19 shots while Roanoke goalkeeper Lindsay Kooiman had four stops.
The Monarchs will face Eastern Mennonite tomorrow at Roanoke for their second game in the ODAC/USA South Challenge at 5 pm.
