Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's soccer team opened USA South Athletic Conference action with a 2-0 victory over Averett University.
The first half passed nearly scoreless before Methodist freshman
Steve Harris took on the goalkeeper inside the six-yard box and scored to the far post. The Monarchs (5-7, 1-0) held the 1-0 lead at halftime.
Averett (6-3-1, 1-1) out shot the Monarchs 7-3 in the second half and drew a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, but Methodist freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Gill dove to his left to make the save. In the 86th minute Methodist freshman
Brendan Wilson beat the Averett defense and scored the Monarchs second goal on a one versus one opportunity with the goalkeeper.
Gill finished with 10 saves in goal to preserve the shutout while Nate Barker had three saves for Averett.
The Monarchs will be on the road Saturday to take on third ranked Christopher Newport at 7 pm.
