Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The third seeded Methodist men's soccer team defeated #6 Shenandoah 4-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament.
Shenandoah (4-11-2) caught the Monarchs (10-9) off guard with the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute of play. The Hornets' Chris Wondree scored off of Karim Kamara's long ball but the Monarchs came back and tied it just before halftime with a goal from freshman
Brendan Wilson. Senior
Bret Brennan split the defense with a pass to set Wilson up for the shot to the left post.
The Hornets out shot the Monarchs 5-4 in the first half, but Methodist regrouped and came out firing in the second half. Freshman
Shane Davis scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 52nd minute after a cornerkick from Brennan. Brennan picked up his third assist of the day on a goal from freshman
Steve Harris in the 63rd minute. Davis scored his second goal of the day to wrap up the scoring with a goal from the six-yard box in the the 78th minute.
Methodist goalkeeper
Kyle Beach had four saves in nearly 57 minutes played while
Ryan Gill finished out the remainder of the game adding a save.
Arman Bozorgmanesh had three saves for the Hornets.
Methodist advances to face #2 N.C. Wesleyan in the USA South Tournament semifinal on Friday at 7:30 pm. The semifinals and finals will take place at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Va.
