Methodist Men Fall in Semifinal

Box Score MARTINSVILLE, Va. - No. 2 North Carolina Wesleyan advanced to the USA South Men's Soccer Championship with a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Methodist in a defensive battle in the second semifinal match of the USA South Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville, Virginia. 

Robert Ivanovich of the Battling Bishops (11-7) chipped in the second goal to seal the 2-1 win for NC Wesleyan with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation. Arkadiusz Trochowski earned his second assist on the play.

 

Methodist's (10-10) Bret Brennan initiated the scoring with a 25-yard blast in the 19th minute of the match. The Monarchs held the momentum through the majority of the first half, but the Battling Bishops tied the game with just under three minutes to go before the intermission. Ousman Sarr punched in a corner kick from Trochowski.  

The Monarchs managed just one shot in the second half but the defense held off the Bishops until Ivanovich scored the game-winner.

Methodist goalkeeper Kyle Beach finished with nine saves while Benjamin Kruk had one stop for the Bishops.

N.C. Wesleyan advances to face Christopher Newport for the tournament championship.
