Methodist Baseball Picks Up Two Wins

Brad Davis hit grand slam for Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Monarchs added two more wins in the Methodist University Invitational on Saturday. They came from behind to defeat Huntingdon 12-11 before cruising past Frostburg State 17-2.

In game one, Methodist opened with two runs in the first inning against Huntingdon capitalizing on defensive errors. Huntingdon came back and put together five hits in the second to score four runs.  The Hawks extended their lead to 7-2 in the third with three more hits.

The Monarchs scored a run on a bases loaded walk from sophomore Brian Inghram, but Huntingdon came back with three additional runs in the fifth to lead 7-3. Senior Brad Davis tripled to right in the bottom of the inning before scoring on junior Brian Halpin's sacrifice fly. In the sixth inning sophomore Shawn Lovette scored in a wild pitch before Davis hit a grand slam to left center to move the Monarchs within one run. Methodist put together a two-out rally in the seventh capped off by a two-RBI double from Davis to take the 12-10 lead. The Hawks scored a run in the eighth but Methodist finished with the 12-11 victory.

Junior Joshua Andrade picked up the win in relief with junior Alex Sholar earning the save. Lovette hit 4-for-4 while Davis finished with six RBI.

In the second game, the Monarchs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a 3-run homerun from senior Dustin Proctor.  Methodist added a run in the second inning on a RBI-single from senior Mike Twichell and rattled off five more runs in the third inning. Proctor hit a two-run homerun in the fourth to extend the lead to 10-0. Methodist strung together three hits for five runs in the sixth inning. Frostburg prevented the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the sixth but the Monarchs capped off the scoring with a run in the sixth to finish with the 17-2 win.

Senior Elliott Bisplinghoff pitched five shutout innings for the win on the mound while freshman Doug Furlong and senior Chase Cates finished in relief.

The Monarchs will finish at the Methodist Invitational on Sunday against Lynchburg at 4 pm.
