Baseball Trounces Alma 12-0

MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Tuesday night to face Alma College (MI). The Monarchs came away with their third shutout of the season to win 12-0.

Methodist (6-3) came up empty during their first at bat but picked up a run in the second when Dustin Proctor tripled to left field and Brian Halpin laid down the sacrifice for Proctor to score. The Monarchs picked up another run in the third when Tripp Lancaster hit a two-out single, stole second and scored on Mike Twichell's single up the middle for the 2-0 lead.

The Monarchs exploded with five runs in the fifth inning all scored during another two-out rally.  Brian Inghram led off with a walk and Trey Such doubled to score Inghram. Such scored on Philip Betterly's single for the 4-0 advantage. Doug Furlong singled to advance Betterly and Lancaster's second hit of the day scored Betterly. Twichell singled scoring both runners for the 7-0 lead after three and a half innings.

Proctor had another triple in the fifth and Halpin hit the RBI single for Proctor to score the Monarchs' eighth run of the game. Methodist finished their scoring with four runs in the sixth inning capped off by a two-run homerun to right center from Such.

Proctor finished 4-for-5 on the night while Such went 3-for-4. Lancaster and Twichell each added two hits for the Monarchs.

Kurt Kelly pitched the first three innings to earn the win giving up just two hits with two strikeouts. Jeremy Wilkins, Chase Cates, and Joshua Andrade came in to combine for the shutout.

The Monarchs will host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday at Armstrong-Shelley Field at 3 pm.
